Piper Companies is seeking a Surgical Scientist to join a dynamic preclinical research team. This full-time, on-site located in Norton Shores, MI role involves hands-on surgical work and protocol development to support innovative biomedical studies.
Responsibilities of the Surgical Scientist:
· Conduct surgical procedures and oversee pre- and post-operative care for laboratory animals involved in research studies.
· Collaborate on the creation and refinement of anesthesia and surgical protocols.
· Advise study teams and regulatory committees on surgical model design and implementation.
· Assist in developing new surgical techniques and improving existing ones under guidance.
· Lead training sessions for surgical staff and provide mentorship to technical personnel.
· Continuously assess and update procedures to align with current industry standards.
· Support the acquisition and maintenance of surgical instruments and equipment.
· Participate in humane euthanasia procedures when required.
· Perform additional tasks as needed to support research operations.
Qualifications of the Surgical Scientist:
· Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences, veterinary technology, or a related field.
· 5+ years of experience in surgical research, preferably in a laboratory setting.
· Surgical Research Technician (SRT) or Surgical Research Specialist (SRS) certifications via the Academy of Surgical Research is preferred.
· Demonstrated ability to perform and troubleshoot a range of surgical procedures independently.
· Strong understanding of the scientific value of surgical models in therapeutic development.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and adaptability to new software platforms.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
· Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs) and federal animal care regulations.
· Experience working with common lab animal species and understanding of study protocols.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
· Approximately 65% of time spent in surgical or lab settings; 35% in office-based tasks.
· Exposure to biological materials, chemicals, and zoonotic agents.
· Must be able to wear protective gear including respirators and N95 masks.
· Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, carry up to 40 lbs, push/pull with up to 75 lbs of force, and standing for extended periods.
· Flexibility to work outside standard hours, including evenings, weekends, and on short notice.
Compensation of the Surgical Scientist:
· $65,000 - $100,000 *based on experience* + 15% annual bonus
