Network Consulting Engineer

Piper Companies is hiring a Network Consulting Engineer for an onsite 6 month contract position with a global technology leader located in Oaktown, VA. The Network Consulting Engineer will lead efforts to analyze network traffic, establish behavioral baselines, and optimize monitoring tools to detect anomalies, enhance security, and mentor junior staff in advanced network analysis techniques.

Responsibilities of the Network Consulting Engineer:

• Perform deep-dive analysis of network traffic and PCAPs to identify abnormal patterns, security threats, and performance bottlenecks.
• Develop and maintain baseline profiles for normal network behavior across multiple enclaves.
• Optimize and operationalize monitoring tools to ensure full visibility and actionable alerting.
• Mentor junior engineers and analysts in advanced network analysis techniques and best practices.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including troubleshooting procedures, monitoring configurations, and monthly summary reports.

Qualifications of the Network Consulting Engineer:

• Active TS/SCI clearance with eligibility for onsite work five days a week.
• Strong background in network routing and switching, with hands-on experience in configuring and troubleshooting complex environments.
• Proficiency in protocol-level traffic analysis, including TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP/S, SMTP, TLS, and VPN.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze packet capture (PCAP) data for identifying threats, anomalies, and performance issues.
• Experience with network monitoring and observability tools, such as ExtraHop, SolarWinds, and Splunk.

Compensation for the Network Consulting Engineer:

• Salary: $187,000-$200,000/year
