Piper Companies is looking for a Staff Veterinarian to join a leading research organization located in Muskegon, Michigan.
Responsibilities of the Staff Veterinarian:
- Promote the day-to-day well-being of animals and provide clinical care for all animals used in research studies in compliance with Animal Welfare Regulations, PHS Policy, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
- Deliver high-quality preventive, routine, and emergency veterinary care, including surgical and diagnostic procedures, and interpret diagnostic test results.
- Collaborate with the Attending Veterinarian, IACUC, senior management, and research teams to ensure responsible animal care and humane endpoints.
- Perform and document physical, neurologic, ophthalmic, and study-specific health assessments.
- Train and mentor veterinary technicians and research staff in anesthesia, surgery, and other animal use activities.
- Maintain regulatory compliance with USDA, AAALAC, OLAW, and internal standards; ensure accurate recordkeeping.
- Develop and implement SOPs related to clinical care, anesthesia, analgesia, necropsy, and behavioral management.
- Oversee performance, development, and compliance for direct reports; assist with hiring and employee relations as needed.
- Maintain required medical and drug-use licenses and attend relevant veterinary conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications for Staff Veterinarian includes:
- DVM degree from a U.S. veterinary medical college or equivalent with U.S. equivalency examination.
- State of Michigan Veterinary License and Controlled Substance License.
- Ability to obtain DEA Controlled Substance Registration.
- Preferred: USDA Category II Accreditation; board certification or eligibility (DACLAM, DACVS, DACVAA, or DACAW).
- Minimum 2 years of industry or CRO laboratory animal clinical medicine experience preferred.
- Experience with NHPs and animal models beyond dogs and cats is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of anesthesia principles, surgical interventions, and interpretation of CNS MRI images.
- Knowledge of GLPs and federal regulations related to laboratory animal care.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office; strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively under time constraints and adapt to changing priorities.
Compensation for Staff Veterinarian includes:
- Rate Range: $130,000 – $150,000+ (higher for exceptional candidates)
