Staff Backend Engineer

Piper Companies is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join a growing team within the education technology space. This engineer will play a key role in shaping the backend services that power mobile and web platforms, directly impacting students, educators, and partners around the world. The candidate will sit on-site, hybrid, in Durham, NC.

Responsibilities of the Staff Backend Engineer include:

• Design, build, and maintain backend services in a TypeScript/Node.js environment with strong reliability and test coverage
• Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to develop APIs and infrastructure supporting mobile and web platforms
• Contribute to technical planning, helping define scope, evaluate complexity, and architect scalable solutions

Qualifications for the Staff Backend Engineer include:

• 7+ years of backend development experience with TypeScript and Node.js, including API development and high‑performance service design
• Experience working with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases, including schema design and optimization
• Familiarity with APM/monitoring tools such as Elastic and experience with CI/CD pipelines, along with exposure to hosting platforms like Render
• Strong experience with development tooling including Visual Studio, debugging workflows, and performance tuning

Compensation for the Staff Backend Engineer includes:

• $165,000 – $190,000 annually
• Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), PTO, holidays, and sick leave as required by law
