Database Engineer

Piper Companies is seeking a Database Engineer to support a leading healthcare services organization through hybrid work in Columbia, MD. This role is ideal for someone experienced in Azure data engineering who enjoys working across multiple teams to strengthen data security, modernize cloud data environments, and optimize database performance that supports business and clinical operations.

Responsibilities of the Database Engineer:

• Deliver technical leadership across database architecture, data flow design, and implementation of cloud‑based data solutions—ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability across the enterprise.

• Collaborate with engineering, security, and business teams to translate requirements into robust data‑layer strategies, including evaluating new technologies, cloud migration options, and enterprise data standards.

• Troubleshoot and optimize complex database issues end‑to‑end—analyzing performance from application interactions through database behavior and underlying storage—to improve system stability and efficiency.

• Enhance and secure critical data processes by strengthening ETL pipelines, improving data protection practices (e.g., encryption, obfuscation, access controls), and contributing to disaster recovery, documentation, and BI/warehouse initiatives.

Qualifications of the Database Engineer:

• 5+ years of data engineering experience focused on Microsoft Azure cloud technologies.

• Hands‑on expertise with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Databricks, and Azure Data Lake.

• Strong proficiency in SQL and Python for automation, transformation, and ETL optimization.

• Familiarity with Azure DevOps, CI/CD development pipelines, and Agile methodologies.

• Knowledge of data security and compliance requirements (e.g., HIPAA, encryption, data masking).

• Experience with data modeling, performance tuning, and cloud‑scale ETL processes.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline preferred.

Compensation of the Database Engineer:

• Salary Range: $135,000 - $145,000 (based on experience)
