Piper Companies is seeking a Lab Technician IV to join a highly skilled team conducting aerosol exposure research within a high‑containment laboratory environment. In this role, the Lab Technician IV will support the design, testing, and maintenance of aerosol exposure systems and equipment, while contributing to scientific studies focused on pathogenesis and the development of medical countermeasures against biothreat agents. This position will be on-site 5 days a week in Fort Detrick, MD.

 

Responsibilities for the Lab Tech IV Includes:

  • Conduct aerosol exposure procedures and support the design, testing, and ongoing maintenance of aerosol exposure equipment.
  • Generate, characterize, and collect biological aerosols for research studies, including work involving animal plethysmography and oversight of aerosol operations.
  • Perform laboratory activities under the direction of the Study Principal Investigator and in full compliance with IACUC protocols and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
  • Work within BSL‑2, BSL‑3, and BSL‑4 laboratory environments, supporting approximately 75–120 aerosol exposure studies each year.
  • Assist in drafting, updating, and reviewing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure alignment with GLP requirements (10–15 SOPs annually).
  • Assemble, evaluate, and troubleshoot aerosol systems in non‑containment areas, maintaining accurate documentation of system testing and maintenance in equipment logs.
  • Calibrate, validate, and certify aerosol systems (8–12 systems per year) in accordance with SOPs and GLP standards.
  • Perform and supervise biological decontamination of Class III biosafety cabinets following aerosol studies (75–120 decontaminations annually).
  • Certify and maintain Class III biosafety cabinets and transport units (12–15 units annually).
  • Partner with AAT leadership to develop and implement technical training programs; train additional staff once qualified.
  • Complete annual GLP training and ensure all training records comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Promptly report any safety concerns or SOP deviations in alignment with USAMRIID policies.
  • Maintain active enrollment in CS‑PRP and BPRP programs as required by contract and regulatory guidelines.

Qualifications for the Lab Tech IV Includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in laboratory equipment design, aerosol systems, and high-containment environments.
  • Familiarity with GLP standards, IACUC protocols, and biosafety procedures.
  • Strong technical writing skills for SOP development and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a regulated research setting.
  • Willingness to undergo required training and certifications, including CS-PRP and BPRP enrollment.

Compensation for the Lab Tech IV  Includes:

  • Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000
