Piper Companies is seeking an Animal Caretaker to support a growing biomedical research program in the Philadelphia area. This individual will play a key role in maintaining the health, safety, and well‑being of laboratory animals used in research, testing, and educational studies. The ideal candidate brings hands‑on experience working with animals in a laboratory or research setting, understands the importance of ethical animal care, and is comfortable working in an environment where animals are used for scientific research.
Responsibilities for the Animal Caretaker:
- Perform daily husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, cage changing, and environmental enrichment
- Monitor the health, behavior, and overall well‑being of laboratory animals
- Maintain clean, sanitary housing conditions following institutional and federal guidelines
- Assist with handling, restraining, and transporting animals as needed for research activities
- Document observations and care activities accurately in accordance with regulatory and institutional requirements
- Support compliance with animal care and use policies, including adherence to AAALAC standards, federal regulations, and IACUC protocols
- Communicate concerns about animal health or facility operations to veterinary or supervisory staff promptly
- Maintain and operate sanitation equipment, such as cage washers and autoclaves
- Contribute to a culture of humane and ethical animal care
Qualifications for the Animal Caretaker:
- Experience working with or handling laboratory animals (academic, internship, volunteer, or professional experience accepted)
- Understanding that this role involves working with animals used in clinical and scientific research
- Ability to follow strict protocols, regulatory standards, and detailed instructions
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and willingness to learn
- Comfort working in an environment with exposure to animal dander and biological materials
Preferred:
- AALAS ALAT certification
- Experience in an AAALAC‑accredited facility
- Familiarity with vivarium operations or biomedical research environments
Compensation for the Animal Caretaker:
- Pay Rate: $21/hr
- Schedule: 1st shift — 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday
- Onsite Requirement: Fully onsite, North Philadelphia location
- Employment Type: Contract‑to‑hire
