Piper Companies is seeking a Veterinary Technician to join a growing research animal care program in the Philadelphia area. This role supports a large laboratory animal facility and involves providing advanced veterinary care, technical support, and training across a variety of species used in biomedical research. The ideal candidate has strong experience with small and large laboratory animals, is proficient in anesthesia and surgical support, and is comfortable working both independently and collaboratively with veterinary, husbandry, and research teams.
Responsibilities for the Veterinary Technician:
- Perform daily health checks and physical examinations for laboratory animals
- Administer medications through various routes, including oral, SQ, IM, and IV
- Perform and monitor anesthesia for rodent and non‑rodent species
- Provide pre‑operative, peri‑operative, and post‑operative care with accurate documentation
- Assist veterinarians during clinical procedures and follow all medical directives
- Maintain accurate medical records, treatment logs, and controlled substance documentation
- Prepare procedure rooms, surgical suites, instruments, and equipment
- Disinfect, sterilize, and autoclave surgical tools and supplies
- Operate and maintain anesthesia machines, ventilators/respirators, and autoclaves
- Properly handle medical waste and ensure compliant disposal
- Conduct rodent and non‑rodent preventive health surveillance
- Perform special treatments and post‑operative follow‑ups as directed
- Train research personnel on animal handling, anesthesia techniques, dosing, and sample collection
- Train staff on zoonotic risks, allergies, and laboratory biohazards
- Collect tissues, perform necropsies, and prepare specimens for analysis
- Assist with drafting documents for IACUC, AAALAC, USDA, and SOP requirements
- Support research projects conducted within the facility as needed
- Assist husbandry teams in special or biohazard situations
- Maintain work areas, inventory, and equipment functionality
Qualifications for the Veterinary Technician:
- 3+ years of experience as a veterinary technician
- Proficiency with anesthesia induction, monitoring, and surgical support
- Experience operating anesthesia machines, ventilators/respirators, and autoclaves
- Ability to work in environments with laboratory animals exposed to biohazards, carcinogens, or infectious agents
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams
- Ability to follow strict SOPs, regulatory standards, and veterinary directives
- Ability to maintain technical competency and professional knowledge in job‑related areas
Preferred:
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, or equivalent)
- AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, or LATG)
- Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or Veterinary Technology
- Experience with large animal anesthesia
- Experience supporting surgical procedures in a research or biomedical setting
Compensation for the Senior Veterinary Technician:
- Pay Rate: $27/hr
- Schedule: 1st shift — 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday
- Onsite Requirement: Fully onsite, North Philadelphia location
