Piper Companies is seeking a Senior Veterinary Technician to join a healthcare organization located in Philadelphia, PA through an onsite, 3-month contract-to-hire position. The Senior Veterinary Technician will conduct daily health checks, administer medications, monitor and perform anesthesia, assist veterinarians, manage and maintain ULAR animal colonies and work areas, provide preventive and perioperative care with record keeping, support research personnel, train technicians and students, participate in ULAR research projects, and perform other assigned duties.
Responsibilities of the Veterinary Technician include:
- Surgical Suite Operations & Animal Care: Provide pre-, peri-, and post-operative animal care with husbandry; set up surgeries including disinfection and autoclaving of supplies, equipment, and rooms; maintain operating rooms, procedure rooms, and prep areas; provide special treatments and post-operative care.
- Medical Supplies, Equipment & Compliance: Purchase and maintain drugs, supplies, and equipment; monitor and maintain equipment (e.g., anesthesia machines, autoclaves); ensure proper medical waste disposal and final animal disposition.
- Health Surveillance, Records & Administration: Conduct rodent and non-rodent physical examinations and rodent health surveillance; maintain accurate records (SOPs, drug usage, medical and surveillance records); manage Veterinary Service Requests including assigning fees and chargebacks.
Training Will Include:
- Provide animal health oversight (physical exams, identification of sick/injured animals), perform anesthesia, dosing, and blood collection for rodents and non-rodents, manage zoonotic and biohazard considerations, support research and treatment regimens, conduct tissue collection and necropsies, assist husbandry in special or biohazard situations, contribute to regulatory and SOP documentation (IACUC, USDA, AAALAC), and support specialized surgical techniques and post-operative care.
Qualifications for the Veterinary Technician include:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or Veterinary Technology is preferred
- 3+ years’ experience as a Veterinary Technician; Certified Vet Tech is desired (CVT, LVT, RVT, etc.)
- Necessary Experience:
- Working with large and small animal species, such as rodents, cats, dogs, pigs, etc.
- Anesthesia administering/monitoring and drug dose calculations
- Surgical and post-operational procedures
- Strong written communication and interpersonal skills; must also be able to work independently
- Must be someone who has a strong understanding of animal welfare vs. animal rights
Compensation for the Veterinary Technician includes:
- Pay Rate: $27/hour
- Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401k, Paid Sick Leave as required by law
- Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7-7:30am-3:30-4pm
