Piper Companies is seeking a Veterinary Technician for a contract‑to‑hire opportunity supporting a large academic research institution with a well‑established laboratory animal resources program. This role provides daily veterinary care and research support across multiple species, with a primary focus on rodents. The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently, has strong technical skills, and communicates effectively with veterinarians and research staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Perform daily health observations and welfare checks for laboratory animals
• Administer medications, calculate drug dosages, and maintain accurate records
• Perform and monitor anesthesia during procedures
• Assist with surgical procedures and provide post‑operative care
• Support veterinarians by following established protocols and procedures
• Manage animal colonies independently while maintaining compliant work areas
• Collaborate with research personnel and provide regular customer‑facing support
QUALIFICATIONS:
• 1+ year of veterinary technician or laboratory animal experience
• Hands‑on experience working with rats and mice (primary species)
• Experience or willingness to work with additional species (dogs, pigs, occasional cats)
• Anesthesia experience, including monitoring and recovery
• Ability to work independently in a research‑focused environment
• Strong understanding of animal welfare principles in a laboratory setting
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
COMPENSATION:
• Pay Rate: $25–$28/hour
• Employment Type: Contract‑to‑Hire
