Piper Companies is looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to join a forward‑thinking agricultural biotechnology organization in a permanent onsite role in Durham, NC. This position will work cross‑functionally with scientific and engineering stakeholders to design and apply advanced machine learning models across biological datasets and operational systems, supporting both research and enterprise initiatives. 

  

Responsibilities of the Machine Learning Engineer include: 

  • Design and implement machine learning solutions by evaluating and integrating existing models, tools, and methodologies to address scientific and business needs. 
  • Partner with research and technical teams to develop scalable data pipelines and prepare high-quality biological datasets for modeling and analysis. 
  • Translate complex scientific questions into actionable ML approaches while clearly communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and external collaborators. 
  • Build, test, and refine prototypes that accelerate analysis, insight generation, and decision-making across research programs. 
  • Deploy, maintain, and support practical ML tools that enhance operational workflows and adoption across teams. 

Qualifications for the Machine Learning Engineer include: 

  • PhD in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline. 
  • 1–3 years of post-doctoral or post-graduate experience applying machine learning to real-world problems. 
  • Deep understanding of statistical methods, optimization techniques, and model theory. 
  • Hands-on experience working with biological data such as genomics, sequencing, or bioinformatics datasets. 
  • Proficiency with modern machine learning frameworks and programming tools. 
  • Strong ability to collaborate and communicate effectively within cross-functional, multidisciplinary environments. 
  • Exposure to multi-modal data, cloud-based research environments, or life sciences applications is a plus. 

  

Compensation for the Machine Learning Engineer

  • Salary Range: $160,000–$195,000/year (USD) 
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), paid time off, and additional employer-sponsored benefits
