Piper Companies is seeking an Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations) to support manufacturing operations within the life sciences industry. The Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations) role focuses on owning facility controls and automation systems, ensuring reliable, compliant operations while supporting manufacturing, quality, and research environments. The Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations) role is a direct placement role with the company and requires you to sit on sit 5 days per week in Pittsburgh, PA.


Responsibilities of the Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations):

  • Own and support facility control and automation systems across their full lifecycle.
  • Partner with Facilities, Engineering, MSAT, Operations, and Quality teams on projects and daily support needs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve automation and controls issues to improve manufacturing performance while maintaining cGMP compliance.
  • Provide configuration, development, and break/fix support for PLC, SCADA, and historian systems.
  • Maintain automation documentation, SOPs, training materials, and validation readiness.
  • Support audits, quality investigations, system maintenance, and automation contractors.


Requirements of the Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations):

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field.
  • 6+ years of experience in a regulated pharmaceutical or life sciences environment.
  • 4+ years of experience integrating equipment with control systems (OPC, Ethernet/IP).
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemens), SCADA (Ignition), and batch systems (S88/S95).
  • Experience with BMS/BAS, OSIsoft PI Historian, and automation infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of 21 CFR Part 11, Annex 11, and GAMP 5.
  • Ability to work in pharmaceutical manufacturing environments; aseptic experience preferred.

Compensation for the Automation Engineer (Manufacturing Operations):

  • $140,000 - $160,000 base salary
  • Full Comprehensive Benefits: Health, Vision, Dental, PTO, Paid Holiday, and Sick Leave if Required by Law.
