Business Analyst – Data & Analytics

Location: Columbia, MD (Hybrid – 1 day onsite per week, Thursdays required)

Duration: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire

Compensation: $90,000 - $105,000 annualized equivalent on a contract rate, depending on experience

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly analytical Business Analyst to join a growing Data & Analytics team supporting large-scale healthcare and data integration initiatives. This position sits at the center of the data lifecycle, partnering with technical and business stakeholders to transform complex requirements into actionable data solutions.

The ideal candidate will possess strong SQL skills, experience working with data transformations and workflows, and the ability to bridge communication between business users and technical teams. This role offers an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex data challenges, collaborating across functions, and contributing to meaningful, data-driven outcomes.

What You'll Do

  • Gather, analyze, and document business requirements and translate them into detailed technical specifications
  • Create clear and comprehensive documentation for data engineering teams to support development efforts
  • Partner with stakeholders across business, technical, clinical, research, and operational teams to define requirements and deliver solutions
  • Support Agile/Scrum processes, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, and coordination of deliverables
  • Collaborate with data engineers during testing and quality assurance activities to validate requirements and ensure successful outcomes
  • Assist in troubleshooting complex data issues and contribute to continuous process improvement initiatives
  • Manage multiple priorities while maintaining organized documentation and project tracking
  • Develop a deep understanding of data sources, workflows, and relationships across enterprise systems
  • Maintain documentation for data sources, business rules, use cases, and reporting specifications

Key Projects

This team serves as a critical bridge within the organization's data ecosystem:

  • Receives and evaluates data from integration teams responsible for ingesting source data
  • Works closely with data engineering teams to transform and prepare data for downstream consumption
  • Supports software engineering teams that utilize prepared data for applications, APIs, analytics, and reporting solutions
  • Helps ensure data quality, consistency, and usability throughout the data pipeline

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or similar role within a data-focused environment
  • Strong SQL skills with the ability to write and understand complex queries beyond basic joins
  • Experience gathering business requirements and translating them into technical specifications
  • Knowledge of data flows, data transformation processes, and system-to-system data movement
  • Experience supporting QA, testing, and validation activities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced SQL experience
  • Python experience for data analysis or data manipulation
  • Experience with Jira
  • Strong Excel skills
  • Healthcare IT, healthcare data, or public health experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience

Compensation & Benefits

  • Target compensation range: $90,000 – $105,000 annually (based on experience)
  • Opportunity to convert to a permanent position after six months

Schedule: Hybrid schedule with one required onsite day per week (Thursday) in Columbia, MD.
