Piper Companies is seeking a Junior Controls Engineer to join an innovative automation and advanced manufacturing organization in the Raleigh, NC area. This Junior Controls Engineer opportunity is a full-time, fully onsite role offering hands-on involvement in the design, programming, testing, and deployment of automated equipment. The position is ideal for early-career engineers looking to expand their expertise in industrial controls, machine automation, and electromechanical systems while developing toward future technical leadership opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Develop, enhance, and troubleshoot PLC/PAC control programs utilizing industry-standard IEC 61131-3 programming methodologies.
- Configure and integrate industrial hardware, including I/O systems, sensors, machine vision equipment, safety devices, and variable frequency drives across automated platforms.
- Perform equipment commissioning, validation, and systematic testing to ensure reliable machine performance and minimize field issues.
- Interpret electrical drawings, diagnose system faults using testing instruments, and support maintenance and optimization efforts.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, scientists, and technical teams to deliver automation solutions and support customer-site installations when required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- 2-3 years of experience supporting PLC/PAC-based automation systems in an industrial, manufacturing, or equipment development environment; equivalent hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Familiarity with industrial communication technologies such as EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, IO-Link, and related automation networking protocols.
- Understanding of electrical schematics, motion control fundamentals, industrial safety practices, VFDs, and sensor integration.
- Experience with HMI/SCADA development, machine vision, database connectivity, AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, Python, C#, or electrical design practices is considered a plus.
Compensation
- Salary Range: $70,000 - $100,000
- Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, sick leave if required by law, and 401K
