Senior Azure Cloud Engineer

Piper Companies is seeking a Senior Azure Cloud Engineer to lead the design, modernization, and hands-on engineering of enterprise Azure cloud infrastructure for a leading financial services organization in Bethesda, MD. The Senior Azure Cloud Engineer will serve as a technical authority for Azure landing zones, Terraform infrastructure-as-code, cloud networking, and secure, repeatable deployments across enterprise environments. This position is hybrid in Bethesda, MD, requiring 4 days onsite per week!

Responsibilities of the Senior Azure Cloud Engineer:

• Design, build, and modernize enterprise Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure with a focus on automation, scalability, security, and operational resilience
• Architect and implement Azure landing zones, including management groups, subscription structures, governance policies, and standardized deployment environments
• Develop and maintain reusable Terraform modules to enable secure, repeatable infrastructure deployments across development, testing, staging, and production environments
• Lead infrastructure-as-code (IaC) initiatives involving Terraform state management, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, configuration standards, and drift detection
• Design and implement Azure networking solutions including hub-and-spoke architectures, virtual networks, routing, Azure Firewall, Network Security Groups (NSGs), private endpoints, and hybrid DNS
• Engineer secure cloud connectivity, private networking, identity integration, and certificate management solutions
• Support cloud-native and serverless infrastructure modernization initiatives by establishing scalable platform foundations and automated deployment patterns
• Build and maintain shared Azure platform services supporting compute, non-production environments, data gateways, secrets management, and enterprise applications
• Develop automation solutions using PowerShell, Azure CLI, and Microsoft Graph to streamline infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and administration
• Partner with managed services providers and engineering teams to establish architecture standards, review technical changes, and ensure infrastructure implementations align with enterprise requirements
• Provide hands-on technical leadership for complex infrastructure deployments, networking changes, and high-risk production modifications
• Establish monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and cloud cost optimization standards across Azure environments

Qualifications for the Senior Azure Cloud Engineer:

• 8+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, systems engineering, or related technical disciplines
• 5+ years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting production Microsoft Azure environments across multiple subscriptions
• 3+ years of hands-on Terraform experience, including reusable modules, state management, CI/CD integration, code reviews, and configuration drift management
• Recent hands-on experience writing Terraform code and implementing Azure networking solutions within the past 12 months
• Demonstrated experience designing and implementing Azure landing zones, cloud governance structures, and enterprise subscription architectures
• Strong experience developing secure, repeatable infrastructure deployments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation
• Deep understanding of Azure networking including virtual networks, hub-and-spoke architectures, private endpoints, hybrid DNS, routing, Azure Firewall, NSGs, and private connectivity
• Experience supporting hybrid cloud networking, WAN connectivity, and Zero Trust network security principles
• Strong automation and scripting experience with PowerShell, Azure CLI, and Microsoft Graph
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure provisioning and automated cloud deployments

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience supporting financial services, banking, or other highly regulated enterprise environments
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305)
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Network Engineer Associate (AZ-700)
• HashiCorp Terraform Associate certification
• Experience with cloud-native architectures, serverless technologies, and modern application infrastructure
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric capacity management, on-premises data gateways, or Azure cost optimization
• Experience supporting Windows infrastructure dependencies including Active Directory, Group Policy, DFS, and AD-integrated DNS
• Experience with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), certificate lifecycle management, and secrets management
• Experience developing infrastructure control evidence for audits, compliance reviews, and risk assessments
• Experience supporting disaster recovery planning, backup validation, and enterprise cloud resilience initiatives

Compensation for the Senior Azure Cloud Engineer includes:

• Salary: $160,000 - $190,000
