JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Summary:  The enterprise architect works within the Architecture Team and assist the organization by taking the company's business strategy and defining an enabling IT architecture to support the realization of the strategy. This individual will strive to understand a company's business and be able to dive deeply into technology issues in an effort to align business goals with the IT environment needed to support current and future goals.

 

Essential Functions:

Responsibilities:

 

Enterprise & Business level planning (technology change)

•             Support the CIO in development of top-level IT Strategy and the creation of future state models and road maps to fulfill strategic objectives

•             Identify opportunities and/or disruptive directions stemming from changes in the industry (IT & Rail) and provide guidance to the organization on ways to take advantage of/or mitigate impacts

•             Technology Innovation – Assess market and trends to identify new technology solutions for investment consideration, executing proof of concepts to ensure viability and use of product to address on capability needs, and research best practice guidance to drive value delivery

•             IT Roadmapping - Developing and managing the process of migrating from the current to target state architectures; identifies strategy to change (execution) opportunities and assists in establishing and securing leadership support for business case to drive implementation

Leadership

•             Lead research efforts (appropriate studies and proof-of-concepts) in order to make well-justified recommendations for strategic change, which may include vendor/product evaluations and development of IT roadmaps to guide direction

•             Lead and facilitate the creation of IT standards, patterns, and best practices to guide solution design and development. Provide stewardship of the Enterprise Architecture, ensuring it aligns with changes in industry and IT environment

•             Provide strategic architectural governance/assurance by facilitating preliminary architecture review process for projects and within the annual project proposal process

Solution Modeling & Design

•             Drive towards agreement on architectural decisions within solution/system development efforts through the depiction of concepts, relationships, constraints, and operations

•             Support project teams in the assessment of available information to develop IT Architectures, including design recommendations, to guide informed decisions

•             In collaboration with other architects and technical leaders, drive the continued maturity of a high-impact architectural practice (people, process, and technology), supporting accelerated progress towards achieving critical enterprise and IT objectives

•             Ability to estimate the financial impact of architecture alternatives

•             Ability to balance the long-term ("big picture") and short-term implications of individual decisions

•             Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments

•             Knowledge of all components of holistic enterprise architecture

•             Familiarity with basic graphical modeling approaches, tools and model repositories

•             Ability to design and implement complex solutions with complex business processes/rules, complex data structures, and complex integration requirements

•             Ability to design and implement solutions that support critical non-functional requirements including scalability, reliability, robustness, security, fault tolerance, reusability, flexibility, and interoperability

•             Ability to design and implement solutions that are optimized to for the capabilities of XaaS platforms (cloud) such as elastic scalability, multi datacenter, eventual consistency, high concurrent, stateless, etc.

•             Ability to apply industry standard architectural paradigms to complex problems such as service oriented, event driven, REST based paradigms

•             Ability to effectively communicate and promote the value of architecture throughout Railinc and the rail industry, presenting architectural ideas at the enterprise level to business, executive, and technical personnel
